Is the latest work in the “Bears of Asheville” series.
“The Royal Father and The Queen Mother are by far the most elaborate paintings I have done in many years.
I wanted to create the male companion for “The Queen Mother” which has been my most popular draw to the gallery and most popular print.
I was inspired to create “The Bears of Asheville” series after observing black bears as they frequented the driveway and back yard where I lived.
It just made sense then to invoke The Royal Father with an even more intricate kingly throne and royal robes.
I wanted to challenge my patience with a more complicated design and details, so I explored the garments and embellishments of Kings in Europe and studying the poses of royal portraits. I included an Egyptian collar, a crown typical of some European countries and a throne made of Norwegian wood. I chose mountain slopes reminiscent of Blue Ridge Parkway hills for the background.
